Having a strong pre workout is one of the best ways to smash the gym, and get some extra gains. They’re not necessary, but they help a lot.
The right pre-workout will get you amped up to go to the gym. It’ll give you a huge surge of energy, and give you that mental focus that you need to aggressively attack the weights.
Some pre-workouts will even help you build muscle faster, recover faster, and some even help boost your testosterone levels (like Nitraflex).
As you guys know, I used to work at a supplement store—so I’ve tried dozens of pre-workouts (some of which have actually been banned, like Jack3d). I know what works and what doesn’t.
So, with that in mind, here are my top 5 strongest pre workouts currently on the market, and the effects that each one will give you.
In general, there’s a few things that you want to look for to find the best pre workouts on the market. This is really key, so listen up.
A lot of guys make the mistake of just viewing the claims that the container makes, or listening to their gym-buddy who heard a rumor about some pre-workout that works really well.
This is a huge mistake, because marketers always lie. You have to use science when you’re trying to determine the best pre-workout.
As I said, most advertising and marketing has one goal, and one goal only: to get you to fork over your hard earned cash.
So, you have to actually look at the nutrition labels of pre workouts, because by US law, they have to disclose what’s in them.
With that in mind, here’s a few of the best pre workout ingredients:
Most decent pre workouts will have at least two or three of these ingredients, so if it doesn’t have any of them, it’s a scam.
There’s a ton of potential ingredients that you could add to a pre-workout, but the best pre workout depends on what you want.
Different pre workouts give you different effects, so you have to decide what effects you want to experience the most.
If you want crazy pumps, for example, look for pre workouts containing Citrulline and L-Arginine, both of which are clinically proven to work.
If you want intense energy, however, look for pre workouts with a lot of caffeine, Rhodiola, and maybe even some Guarana in them.
…or maybe you want laser focus? Then look for pre workouts with potent nootropics, like Vinpocetine, N-Acetyl Tyrosine, or Dimethylamine.
Do you see the point, though? Different pre-workouts will give you different effects. Keep this in mind as you look through this list.
Sure, they’ll all give you more energy, strength, and focus…but depending on which one you want more of, you’ll have to take your pick.
So, with that in mind, let’s get to it.
I just recently tried this, and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite pre-workouts out there. It’s VERY strong, and VERY inexpensive.
Gorilla Mode is one of the strongest pre workouts on the market, in terms of caffeine content, stimulants, and overall formulation
As I said before, you always want to look at the ingredients in the pre workouts you’re consuming, so you know what you’re getting.
Here’s some ingredients in Gorilla Mode:
The Gorilla Mode Pre-Workout is quickly becoming my favorite pre-workout of all time, because it’s REALLY fucking strong.
I usually take Nitraflex, but after taking this stuff, I think it’s my new favorite pre-workout. It has more caffeine than Nitraflex, too.
It’s got creatine, which has been clinically proven to increase strength, a ton of stimulants for focus and energy, and even some bioperine for added absorption and bio-availability.
All in all, if you’re looking for the strongest pre workout on the market, look no further than Gorilla Mode. It’s got a TON of caffeine, so be careful.
Over the past year or two, pharmaceutical companies have been starting to hop on the pre-workout bandwagon, which is definitely a good thing.
Basically, what this means, is that more and more pre workouts are now being researched by actual scientists, rather than gym bros.
…and as I covered in my GAT Nitraflex review, this is one of the few pre workouts that has actually been clinically tested.
To be honest, I hadn’t even heard of this one until a buddy recommended it… and he gave a pretty damn convincing review of it for me.
He claimed that it helped him increase his strength by a whopping 20%, in just a few months… and he was already a SERIOUS lifter.
So, I did some research and found out that not only was GAT NitraFlex tested in a whopping 6 different clinical studies, but it’s also been proven to increase your testosterone levels by a massive 29%.
Yeah. Nitraflex was definitely a pre workout I had to try. He told me it was the most intense pre workout out there… and he’d tried a lot of them.
After receiving it in the mail a couple of months ago, I read the label: “Do not exceed 1 scoop in a single 24-hour period.”
This was kind of surprising, seeing that most pre-workouts allow you to take 2, or even 3 scoops. “Shit, this stuff must be effective,” I thought.
I chugged down one scoop mixed with a cup of water, and waited a few minutes. I like to time taking my pre-workouts so that they hit me right when I get to the gym.
I hopped in my car, started driving down the road, and looked at my watch; it’d been 10 minutes since I took this stuff, and I could already feel it.
As I drove down a winding road, on the way to my local gym, I started to feel an intense surge of aggression.
“FUCK! I NEED TO LIFT SOME WEIGHTS,” I yelled. I turned on some aggressive music, and amped myself up on the way to the gym.
As I pulled into the parking lot, I could feel it really starting to kick in. I grabbed my gym bag, bolted through the front door, checked in, and headed for the locker room.
When I emerged, I had one of the best workouts of my entire life. I broke every single personal record to date.
In my humble opinion, GAT NitraFlex is one of the most powerful pre workouts for focus that I’ve ever tried, and I HIGHLY recommend it.
But, a word of caution—DO NOT take an entire scoop your first time. Take half a scoop to see how you react, because this shit is fucking STRONG.
While Beyond Raw LIT won’t give you the sheer laser focus that Jack3d will give you, it’s still one of the best pre workouts on the market.
Why? I’ll tell you why—because of its emphasis on brain-boosting ingredients, known as “nootropics,” or smart drugs.
As I covered in my Beyond Raw LIT review, it’s got a powerful lineup of brain-boosting drugs, shown to enhance focus, memory, and mood.
It’s got a good bit of caffeine, some beta alanine for pumps, some creatine monohydrate, and best of all, some brain-enhancing drugs.
Here are the two brain enhancing drugs in Beyond Raw LIT:
When combined, these two drugs will wake you the fuck up, and make you feel fully alert, conscious, and AWAKE.
Neuro Factor is a particular type of whole bean coffee extract, that’s loaded with antioxidants and other neuro-protective agents.
ElevATP, on the other hand, is far more interesting. It’s an extract from a few adaptogenic mushrooms, which have incredible mind-boosting effects.
When I take Beyond Raw LIT, my brain lights up like a Christmas tree, and I’m ready to conquer the gym, smash the weights, and get jacked.
Don’t take my word for it, though… try some yourself and see.
Ah, Jack3d. Some call it the holy grail of banned pre-workouts, and others cower in fear of its awesome, meth-like powers.
The FDA, though? As I stated in my Jack3d review, they banned it in 2012, because it was just too damn strong for the masses to handle.
Don’t worry—this isn’t the illegal version, it’s a newly formulated version that’s still extremely effective. This is personally one of my favorite pre-workouts for laser focus, tunnel vision, and good mood.
It’s got a highly bio-available form of creatine, which will lead to greater strength, a nice dose of beta-alanine, which will give you crazy pumps, and best of all? It tastes like Kool-aid.
But, my favorite effect of Jack3d is its ability to put me into a hyper-focused state of mind, like I’m a god damn unstoppable freight train.
I’ve broken some of my best records in the gym after taking two scoops of this stuff; it makes me feel like I’m a fucking warrior, with one sole purpose: to annihilate the barbell.
This pre-workout has a good dose of caffeine, a large amount of Yohimbine, and best of all: two herbal extracts shown to enhance focus… A LOT.
The first of which is Schisandra Chinensis, a vine native to Eastern Russia, which has been shown to effectively fight stress, fatigue, and depression, while simultaneously boosting your focus, mood, and energy levels.
The second of which, is Rhodiola Rosea, an arctic herb which has been proven to enhance endurance, mental clarity, and good emotions.
Overall, Jack3d is probably the best pre-workout supplement for sheer laser-focus on the market. It’s hard to find though, so be careful.
This is hands down one of the best pre workouts, for sustained energy, and enhanced recovery outside of the gym.
Due to its powerful anti-fatigue complex, I find that Pre Jym not only gives me energy in the gym, but also enhances productivity afterwards.
I love waking up early in the morning, doing my morning routine, chugging down a delicious Black Cherry scoop of Pre Jym, and hitting the gym like an animal.
But it doesn’t stop there. The sustained energy carries me through the day. I get home, have a huge meal to nourish my broken down muscles, and then churn out blog articles for another solid 4-5 hours.
That’s how effective this stuff is—not only will the anti-fatigue complex give you energy in the gym, but it’ll carry you through the rest of the day.
If you workout early in the morning, I HIGHLY recommend Pre Jym, because it will help you remain productive throughout the day.
If you workout late at night, I definitely don’t recommend this one—you don’t want to be up all night.
But, I’ve taken this pre-workout plenty of times in the afternoon and don’t have any problem falling asleep around 10 or 11.
In my opinion, Pre Jym is hands down the most effective pre-workout for sustained energy in the gym, and improved recovery afterwards.
I realize that some of you may not like to put a whole bunch of stimulants in your body, for whatever reason.
Maybe you enjoy having your strong-ass morning coffee, and don’t want to double your daily caffeine intake by having a caffeinated pre workout.
I totally get that. When I’m in a period of immersion in the gym (aka getting jacked is my number one priority), I always take pre-workouts.
But, when I’m in a period of immersion for work (like I am currently), I would rather have my morning coffee and not bother with a stimulant based pre-workout.
That’s where this stuff comes in. Onnit’s 1-2 punch combo of T+ and Shroomtech Sport is absolutely incredible.
Hell, even though this stuff doesn’t even have any stimulants in it, I feel like it’s stronger than a lot of pre-workouts like C4 and ON Gold Standard (no joke, that stuff did very little for me).
T+ has a shit ton of ingredients that have been clinically proven to enhance strength by up to 36%, and Shroomtech Sport has a mega-dose of B vitamins and Cordyceps Mushrooms to give you one hell of an energy rush.
The first time I heard about this stuff, I did a little bit of research and found out that Cordyceps, the main ingredient in Shroomtech Sport, is this weird mushroom that grows on the backs of caterpillars in the Andes or some shit like that.
Okay. As a supplement guru, I had to fucking try this stuff.
In fact, I still vividly remember the first time I did. It was about 3 years ago. I’d just come back from grabbing breakfast with a friend, and decided to take a few pills along with one scoop of T+.
According to the package, I was to wait 45 minutes before working out (this is longer than most pre-workouts).
Whatever, that’s cool – I just sat at my computer and watched some motivational YouTube videos to get myself pumped up. Then, suddenly, it hit me.
I shit you not, I felt the single greatest surge of energy that I’ve ever felt. I literally got so much energy that I had to jump up and down and swing my fists in the air for a solid three minutes before getting my shit together and heading to the gym.
I then went on to have one of the craziest, most intensely focused workouts that I’ve ever had in my life.
I honestly don’t know how this stuff works, aside from it boosting testosterone and enhancing ATP production. But, what matters is that it fucking works.
If you’re looking for a non-stimulant pre-workout, I cannot recommend Onnit’s T+ and Shroomtech Sport combo enough. It’s by far the best non-stimulant pre-workout on the market.
Pre workouts can be confusing, especially for gym newbies.
So, I’ve compiled a list of the top pre workout questions that I get on a regular basis.
If you have any questions, be sure to just shoot me an email, and I’ll be more than happy to help.
In my opinion, the Gorilla Mode pre-workout is the strongest pre workout on the market.. I take it almost every day I go to the gym.
Whenever I take Gorilla Mode, it’s like a fucking freight train hits my mind and body, and I’m LASER focused in the gym.
Sometimes, if I want to break through some PR’s, I’ll also combine it with Adderall (I have a prescription) or Modafinil.
As I said in my C4 pre workout review, I think it’s pretty much just bunk.
It isn’t necessarily that it’s BAD, per say… it just isn’t great.
The only thing great about C4 is its marketing. The ingredients are mediocre, and so is the high.
In my experience, 5150 has the most caffeine out of any pre workout I’ve ever tried. Just one scoop has 470 fucking milligrams of caffeine.
To put that in perspective, the FDA recommends you don’t take ANYMORE than 300mg of caffeine per day. So, this stuff is basically like legal meth.
This stuff literally has the highest caffeine content that I’ve ever seen in a pre workout before, and I’ve tried at least a hundred at this point.
In my experience, Vasoblitz is the best pump pre workout. It will give you vein-splitting, artery popping pumps like you’ve never had before.
Seriously. This stuff is by far the most intense pre workout supplement if you want to get your pump on. You’ll never be satisfied with anything else.
Keep in mind though, that it’s a non-stimulant pre workout. So, if you want some extra energy, consider combining it with caffeine or something.
I don’t even know if I should be saying this or not, because this shit is literally the highest stimulant pre workout you will ever try.
…and no, not in a good way. Just one scoop of Stim Lord, and I literally felt like my heart was going to explode (and I have a high tolerance).
If you’re a freaking meth addict who wants the most intense, focused, stim crazy pre workout of all time, though? You just might want to give it a try.
In summary, these are some of the best pre-workouts that I’ve ever taken.
Like I said though, you don’t need pre-workouts to gain muscle or have a great workout. But, with that in mind, they certainly help a ton.

The best pre workout is going to depend on what you want specifically. Each pre workout is meant to have different effects on the body, so depending on what you want, you may need to try different pre workouts.
The Jack3d pre workout, for example, is known for improving energy, focus, and giving you great pumps. Beyond Raw LIT pre workout however, is more focused on the cognitive aspect of working out (focus, mental clarity, etc.).
Overall, Nitraflex is my favorite pre workout, because it's clinically proven to boost testosterone, has 300mg of caffeine, and gives me laser focus and great pumps in the gym.
Yes, unfortunately it was. After the FDA banned DMAA in 2012, Jack3d was taken off the market for containing this ingredient.
While DMAA is extremely strong, it also has a lot of side effects. Since then, however, Jack3d has reformulated their pre workout and it's back on the market. I've tried it myself, and I've got to say... it's pretty damn strong.
There's a lot of high stimulant pre workouts out there, but in my experience Stim Lord is the best. It's got 400mg of caffeine, and a ton of ingredients that increase your body's adrenaline levels... so you should definitely use with caution.
Rich Piana's 5150 pre workout is also a great option, and while it isn't as high in stimulants as Stim Lord is, it's got more pump-enhancing ingredients, so it's more well rounded.
A pre workout is a supplement that's taken before your workout, to enhance your strength, focus, and energy. Pre workouts contain ingredients like caffeine, DMAE, L-Theanine, and beta alanine to help improve your workouts.
This isn't just "bro science" either. There's a lot of clinical evidence to support the fact that ingredients such as caffeine and beta alanine improve your physical strength and endurance in the gym.
L-Theanine has been shown to improve mental clarity, and DMAE has been shown to drastically increase energy levels. So, if you're looking to get an extra edge in the weight room, taking a pre workout supplement is a great way to do it!
Personally, I take my pre workout around 30 minutes before hitting the gym. With stronger pre workouts, you'll start feeling the effects within just a few minutes, and with weaker pre workouts, it might take up to 20 minutes before you start feeling it.
Most professionals recommend taking your pre workout 30 minutes before hitting the gym, though. Keep in mind it's best to take your pre workout supplement on an empty stomach, because it will hit you way faster than if you've eaten recently.
How long a pre workout supplement lasts will depend on the pre workout you end up taking. Most pre workouts will last about 2-3 hours, which is just enough time for you to pound the weight room and get a good lift in.
Other non-stimulant pre workouts may have a more subtle effect, but will end up lasting longer. To make matters even more complicated, some pre workouts have a timed release, so they'll last 4-6 hours.
In short, there's no "one answer" for this question, but most pre workouts end up lasting around 2-3 hours.
This is a hard question to answer, because it depends on how you define "strongest." That being said, the strongest pre workout, in my opinion, is Stim Lord. This is far too strong for beginners however, and can have many nasty side effects.
It has a whopping 400mg of caffeine, as well as numerous ingredients that boost synephrine and epinephrine levels in your body, so the high level of stimulants can put users at risk of having a heart attack. This is why I do not recommend Stim Lord.
